Yoga-piphany

For those of you that are saying what the heck is that... Every now and then a Yoga student experiences an "Ah-ha."  A discovery about one's self.  A movement pattern, a missing breath, a handstand etc...

My Yoga-piphany happened while planning a Yoga class...

Sharon Gannon said "A good teacher lives for their students and is only interested in facilitating the student’s enlightenment."

Since our own ideas of enlightenment or realization can be different, my goal as a teacher is to "soften" those rigid or blocked areas of the body, mind, and subtle bodies.  By softening those areas within, we invite self-discovery.  Does that make sense?

So the idea of "Yoga-Court" in my humble opinion is not a court of public opinion, but the realization as a teacher of your own intentions.  I shouldn't simply teach a certain way because it is popular; I need to teach what's in my heart.  I needn't worry about the results only the genuine love that I can offer.  It is all that I can offer :)

Humbly yours,
Justin

  1. Teaching through love and facilitating the self-discovery of your students is a commendable approach. I was reading an article yesterday about approaches in education and one quote that really appealed to me was:

"Yet only through communication can human life hold meaning. The teacher's thinking is authenticated only by the authenticity of the students' thinking. The teacher cannot think for her students, nor can she impose her thought on them. Authentic thinking, thinking that is concerned about reality, does not take place in ivory tower isolation, but only in communication."

~Paulo Freire: Chapter Two of Pedagogy of the Oppressed (http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/philosophy/education/freire/freire-2.html) [pretty heavy on the Marxist theory but I really value the basic message]

This back and forth, dialogical approach to teaching and learning can foster that personal enlightenment, allowing a student to find what is right and meaningful to them. You, perhaps, help to promote awareness of certain areas of the body for a student, and maybe that leads he or she to think or consider new things. I know that when you shared your knowledge with me its definitely brought me to ponder new ideas! I'm sorry for writing a dissertation on your blog.
